1939年出生於美國，在哈佛大學研習英國文學及建築，並在倫敦大學的Reyner Banham教授門下學習獲得博士學位。
Jencks是第一位為後現代建築下定義，並因而知名的評論家。之後，引發了許多有關如何界定建築的問題。文學背景出身的Jencks，以一連串關於後現代建築的著作受到矚目。
1977年出版的“The Language of Post-Modern Architecture”一書中，他在第一部份便宣告現代建築已死，第二部份建築傳達的模式則舉出許多建築物造型引人聯想的例子。
80年代他的著作，一再地以文章說明新建築的方向，其作品或多或少影響了大眾以及建築的看法和走向。他曾在UCLA擔任客座教授，也在英國的A.A學院擔任兼任教職，演講地點遍佈美洲歐洲及日本。
除了有關建築的文章之外，他曾製做了若干建築的電視節目，設計過幾棟建築。他的象徵性、記號性建築，影響了一些有關後現代的建築活動，而他的家具也在米蘭生產。
