THE MEANING OF PREFERENCES FOR RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENT FEATURES: A CASE STUDY AMONG APARTMENT DWELLERS IN THE NETHERLANDS

居住環境特性偏好選擇的意義:以荷蘭公寓為例

AUTHOR: Astrid Zwarts; Henny Coolen

ABSTRACT
Previous housing studies have been based on the assumption that individuals and households are likely to prefer those features of a dwelling that will contribute positively to achieving goals and values in life.

In the present article, it is assumed that the meaning of the residential environment lies in this functional relationship between residential environment features, on the one hand, and goals and values on the other It is found that the residential environment not only has lower-level or functional meanings for its residents but also a wide variety of middle-level or symbolic meanings. This article presents the results of a case study in the residential environment preferences of apartment dwellers in the Netherlands. The meaning structures of apartment dwellers are analyzed in order to obtain an insight into the meanings and motivations that underlie preferences for the residential environment.

These analyses are based on a conceptual framework and research methodology that were specially developed for this purpose and that can be traced back to the disciplines of environmental psychology, environment-behavior studies, and consumer research.
