當代日本建築大師內籐廣認為,從1960年代以來由於建設需求擴增,所使用的素材都有往化學建材靠攏的趨勢,因此在設計建築的工作上,從目錄上選擇建材也似乎成為必要的程序。於是,內籐廣把這個建材大量產出的時代稱為「化學的時代」。然而,內籐廣自己的建築卻與時代背道而馳,創造出屬於「內籐流」的「自然素材作法」。
